Woodbury’s Public Safety Campus Expansion: Enhancing Community Services

Woodbury’s Public Safety Campus Expansion: Enhancing Community Services

Woodbury is embarking on a significant expansion of its Public Safety Campus, aiming to enhance the integration and efficiency of its emergency services. The proposed 100,000-square-foot facility will consolidate fire, EMS, police, and emergency preparedness services under one roof, addressing current challenges and preparing for future community needs.

Addressing Current Challenges

The existing Public Safety building on Radio Drive faces issues such as overcrowding and suboptimal location for emergency responses. Additionally, the facility lacks adequate spaces for 24-hour staff, secure equipment storage, and proper ventilation in vehicle bays. These limitations have prompted the city to propose a comprehensive renovation and expansion to better serve the community.

Project Details and Funding

The expansion plan includes a new multi-story fire wing with dormitories for 24-hour staffing and a decontamination ‘hot zone’ to reduce firefighter exposure to harmful substances. The project is estimated to cost $59.3 million, with bids coming in below earlier estimates. To fund the majority of this project, the city is considering a voter referendum for a local option sales tax. This approach aims to improve response times, ensure a more secure environment for staff and the public, and foster a safer, more welcoming community.

Community Involvement

Residents are encouraged to stay informed and participate in upcoming discussions regarding the Public Safety Campus expansion. The city emphasizes the importance of community input in shaping a facility that meets the needs and expectations of Woodbury’s growing population.
