Woodbury’s Commitment to Environmental Stewardship

Woodbury’s Commitment to Environmental Stewardship

Woodbury has long prioritized the health and sustainability of its natural and built environments. Recognizing the interconnectedness of environmental health, economic vitality, and community well-being, the city has developed a comprehensive Environmental Stewardship Plan to guide its efforts.

Environmental Stewardship Plan

Adopted by the City Council on December 11, 2024, the Environmental Stewardship Plan serves as a roadmap for preserving and enhancing Woodbury’s environment. The plan encompasses various focus areas, including:

  • Transportation and Land Use: Promoting sustainable development and transportation options.
  • Buildings and Energy: Encouraging energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy sources.
  • Waste Management: Implementing strategies to reduce waste and increase recycling efforts.
  • Water: Protecting water resources through conservation and quality initiatives.
  • Local Food and Agriculture: Supporting local food systems and sustainable agricultural practices.
  • Greenspace and Ecosystems: Preserving natural habitats and promoting biodiversity.
  • Health and Safety: Ensuring environmental factors contribute positively to public health.
  • Economy: Integrating environmental considerations into economic development.

The plan also includes a two-year roadmap outlining specific actions and goals for each focus area, ensuring measurable progress toward sustainability.

Community Engagement and Initiatives

Community involvement has been integral to the development and implementation of the Environmental Stewardship Plan. Between August and December 2023, the city conducted an online questionnaire to gather resident feedback on environmental priorities. The response was overwhelmingly positive, with 98% of the 529 respondents residing in Woodbury and 22% working or owning businesses in the city.

In addition to the plan, Woodbury has undertaken several initiatives to promote environmental stewardship:

  • Water Treatment: Addressing concerns about per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in drinking water, the city constructed a temporary water treatment plant in 2020, with plans for a permanent facility underway.
  • Natural Resources Management: Collaborating with environmental consulting firms to assess and restore natural areas, aiming to enhance ecological health and biodiversity.
  • Sustainability Programs: Offering resources and programs to residents, such as the Smart Irrigation Controller Program and water rebates, to encourage water conservation and sustainable practices.

Looking Ahead

Woodbury’s commitment to environmental stewardship is an ongoing endeavor. By implementing the strategies outlined in the Environmental Stewardship Plan and fostering community engagement, the city aims to create a sustainable and resilient environment for current and future generations.

Residents are encouraged to participate in local sustainability programs and stay informed about the city’s environmental initiatives. Together, we can ensure that Woodbury remains a vibrant and healthy community for years to come.
