Woodbury has long prioritized the health and sustainability of its natural environment. Recognizing the interconnectedness of environmental health, economic vitality, and community well-being, the city has developed a comprehensive Environmental Stewardship Plan to guide its efforts.
Environmental Stewardship Plan
Adopted by the City Council on December 11, 2024, the Environmental Stewardship Plan serves as a roadmap for preserving and enhancing Woodbury’s environment. The plan encompasses various focus areas, including transportation and land use, buildings and energy, waste management, water resources, local food and agriculture, greenspace and ecosystems, health and safety, and the economy. Each section outlines specific goals and strategies aimed at fostering conservation, social responsibility, and best management practices.
Community Engagement and Strategic Initiatives
Community involvement has been integral to the development of the Environmental Stewardship Plan. Between August and December 2023, the city conducted an online questionnaire to gather resident feedback on environmental priorities. Of the 529 respondents, 98% were Woodbury residents, reflecting strong local interest in environmental issues. This input has been instrumental in shaping the plan’s objectives and actions.
In alignment with the plan, the city has identified Environmental Stewardship as one of its 2025-2028 Strategic Initiatives. This designation underscores Woodbury’s commitment to proactive environmental management and positions the city to secure resources such as grants and awards to support its sustainability efforts.
Ongoing Environmental Projects
Woodbury is actively implementing projects to enhance its environmental resilience. The city is constructing a permanent water treatment plant to address per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination in its water supply. In the interim, a temporary treatment facility is operational, ensuring residents have access to safe drinking water.
Additionally, the city is collaborating with environmental consulting firms to develop a Natural Resources Management Plan. This initiative aims to restore and maintain the ecological health of Woodbury’s parks and open spaces by prioritizing areas for restoration, suppressing invasive species, and promoting native plant diversity.
Looking Ahead
Woodbury’s Environmental Stewardship Plan reflects a comprehensive and forward-thinking approach to environmental management. By integrating community input, strategic planning, and proactive projects, the city is dedicated to preserving its natural environment for current and future generations.
